The community of Omaha, Nebraska laid to rest one of its finest officers, after Officer Kerrie Orozco was gunned down in the line of duty, after attempting to serve an arrest warrant to 26-year-old Marcus Wheeler.
During the shootout, Orozco tragically lost her life, just one day before she was due to go on maternity leave to take care of her premature baby girl.
As hundreds grieving members of the community arrived for Orozco’s funeral, unfortunately, so did about a dozen members from the vile Westboro Baptist Church, infamous for protesting law enforcement and military funerals.
But Omaha residents weren’t having it, and as the hate group lined up to protest near the main interstate, members of the community along with the Patriot Guard lined up to block the despicable church members, utilizing white sheets they had painted with blue crosses.
After catching wind that the church would protest the officer’s funeral, nearly 1,0o0 members of the Omaha community came together to organize against the church’s protest, painting blue crosses on white sheets to signify the police department.
“Everybody just came together,†said Kate Kielion, 33, whose father is a retired captain with the Omaha Police. “Everybody wanted to help. Our purpose was to hide the hate and show the love, and that’s what happened.
Leading the charge against the church was 26-year-old Josh Swafford, who wanted to do everything to protect the grieving family against the demonstrators, and soon set a plan in action to combat the church members’ protest, by organizing an event on Facebook.
“We’re all in this together,†said Swafford. “Everyone should be able to grieve in peace.â€
The result was nothing short of astounding, as the only thing visible lining the streets that day were supporters for the fallen officer, standing proud with their partitions made of sheets.
Omaha resident Heather Jacobsen watched the events unfold, and said it was such a proud moment for her community.
“So proud to be a part of Omaha. Yesterday was a true testament to the strength and true heart of our city,” she stated.
Way to go, Omaha! Although nothing will bring this mother back, it’s great to know that light and good that’s in the hearts of most Americans, will always outshine the evil actions of the minority.
