So called “moderate Muslims” will attempt to justify the dehumanizing treatment of woman in Islamic society today, but what is happening to women under Islamic rule is in accordance with Islamic orthodoxy.  According to Islam, women belong to men, they are the protectors and “maintainers” of women.  In Islam, women are considered dangerous both sexually and in other ways. Therefore women should not to be allowed to have any authority in society other than in their roles as wives and mothers; they become mere extensions of men. Islam’s prophet says: “There is no salvation for a man or a nation who allows women to rule over themâ€. So women’s freedom must be restricted.
Saudi Arabia is a country that is infamous for restricting the freedoms of women. Most people know that Saudi women are not permitted to drive, but they do not know why. One ridiculous explanation came from Sheikh Saleh bin Saad al-Lohaidan, a judicial adviser to an association of Gulf psychologists. He recently told a Saudi website that “If a woman drives a car, not out of pure necessity, that could have negative physiological impacts as functional and physiological medical studies show that it automatically affects the ovaries and pushes the pelvis upwards. That is why we find those who regularly drive have children with clinical problems of varying degrees.â€
The true reason of course, is control. If a woman got in a car accident, she would be forced to deal with the male driver of the other car, a stranger, with no oversight.  Women are expected to have the consent of their guardian (a husband usually, or otherwise a father or close male relative) for virtually every activity—including work, school, and travel.
In the video shown below, Saudi historian Saleh Al-Saadoon said that women should not be allowed to drive on the grounds that they might get raped if their car broke down on the roadside. He said that “[Western women] don’t care if they are raped on the roadside, but we do.â€Â
Well this is news to me. As a women, I care very much if I am raped, but that is how Muslim men view western women. Because we don’t cover ourselves from head to toe, and we don’t allow out husbands to be our masters, we are inviting rape. Yet if I speak out about my disgust for the way Muslims treat so many women today, I am called an “Islamophobe”. Â Well, at least I’m an Islamophobe who can drive.
