A two week old baby in India is struggling to survive after her parents have tragically refused to feed her due to her skin abnormality. The little girl, who was born two months prematurely and barely two pounds, suffers from a rare skin condition believed to be Intra-Uterine Growth Retardation (IUGR), which causes the skin to have a wrinkly appearance.
The mother was taken for regular checkups during her pregnancy, and nothing seemed to be amiss. But as soon as the parents saw what their baby looked like, they completely abandoned her.
The baby girl’s grandfather, Dilip Dode, has taken the young infant into his care, and had been feeding her goat milk in an attempt to get her healthy. When the baby was finally brought to the hospital, she was near death due to dehydration.
The grandfather commented:
“When the baby was given to us, we were left shocked,” she did not have the usual features and the word soon spread in the village. From our relatives to villagers, everyone gathered at our home to have a look at the baby. And when they got to see her they ran away in fear.”
“It is really disheartening that even her parents have rejected her but I will go to any extent to save her.â€
“I will try to convince her parents to accept her but if they still refuse, I will raise her up myself.
“It is not her fault to have born different and I will not throw her for this disease.â€
The hospital where the baby is staying has offered to pay for the child’s medical bills, which at this point, are around $8,000. Doctors won’t be able to start treatments for her actual condition until test results come back, and that could take up to two weeks.
In the meantime, the hospital has made arrangements so the grandfather can stay close to the child.
