Bowe Bergdahl is speaking out for the first time since his release from a five year captivity with the Taliban. His response comes just a few hours after the Army officially charged him with desertion.

CNN broke the news tonight, and Barbara Starr explained that in a lengthy document released by Bergdahl’s civilian lawyer, there is a portion of the text in Bergdahl’s own words, describing what he went through. Here’s the part Starr read aloud:

“I was kept in constant isolation for the entire fire years, with little to no understanding of time… told I was going to be executed… told I would have my ears and nose cut off.”

Bergdahl claims that he was chained to a bed spread-eagle and blindfolded. He says he had open wounds on his wrists, and was beaten with a copper cable. The question of why he deserted his platoon was never answered.
