If you are white in America today, it seems that there is nothing you have the right to be upset about. When you point out how ridiculous some people are for getting offended by every little thing, you are told that you can’t possibly understand because of your “white privilege”.
A California college recently banned the phrases “Everyone can succeed if they work hard enough” and “America is the land of opportunity”, because they were examples of “subconscious racism”. Now if I were to say how insane that is, I would be called a racist. That isn’t to say racism doesn’t exist anymore in this country, but we have come a long way.
So what is a white person to do? If we praise the progress America has made when it comes to race, we are minimizing the seriousness of the racism that still exists. If we avoid the subject, because we don’t want to say the wrong thing, we are called cowards for not talking about race. If we try to have a honest conversation about race, and question the double standards that white people face, it’s our white privilege talking. And now, if we say something as harmless as “everyone can succeed” we are scolded for the use of subconscious racism.
So in the midst of “offensive” phrases and flags being banned for all sorts of reasons, one man named Ryan Koch started a petition for white people. The petition calls for the popular restaurant ” Cracker Barrel” to change their name because it is racist. From Change.org:
I say all of us European Americans start protesting C****er Barrel. It uses an offensive slur and it is deeply offensive and mocks our long and proud heritage.
The name is offensive, their logo stereotypes European Americans as people who sit on chairs and lean against what appears to be a bourbon barrel, claiming we are all a bunch of alcoholics. Sure, they’ll SAY it’s a “cracker” barrel but everyone knows crackers don’t come in barrels, they come in bags and boxes!
Change the name C****er Barrel to Caucasian Barrel. After all, white people should have something to be offended by, too!
So far over 10,000 people have signed the petition. Some may take this seriously, but I’m betting most of those who signed only did it to make a point. So if you want to join in, the petition can be found HERE. But be careful, signing this petition will definitely make you a racist, but then again what doesn’t these days?
